Are we awake?

To be quite honest, I wanted my entire rant about the Corona virus to be on The Average Podcast. I know I said that the blog would be the place where all my rants would take place. However, the severity of the situation made me decide to put the rant into spoken form with the hopes that people would hear the anger and frustration in my voice and it would snap them into action or more appropriately, inaction.

Unfortunately it was not to be. The sound wasn't just coming together for the podcast and maybe it was a sign for me to take some time and gather my thoughts before I release a rant of epic proportions.

I wanted to snap people into inaction because obviously the right step to take during this pandemic would be to stay at home. This will go down in history as one of the few times where doing nothing was the best solution to our problem.

It is appalling how unseriously the Nigerian populace is taking this threat. It has not sunk in for a lot of people that this virus is real and that it kills. A lot of people are still going about their lives and businesses as if a life changing pandemic isn't happening before our very eyes.

When I was preparing to do the Podcast episode there were only 22 cases of Corona virus confirmed in the entire country.

As at the time of writing this blog post, this number has more than doubled. I am of the sincere and unmovable opinion that the actual number of people with the Corona virus in Nigeria is a lot more than the number of people who have been confirmed positive by the tests.

Here's why. From the information on the NCDC website, there are only 5 laboratories in the country with the ability to test for the Corona virus. To a regular person, this should obviously point to the fact that we do not have nearly enough resources or equipments or locations to correctly decipher the number of people who are actually infected. This goes to show that anyone at this moment (including your next door neighbor) could have the Corona virus.

Does this sound scary yet? I hope it does. Even though the general aim of this blog post is not to scare us into locking ourselves in our rooms, we all really need to know that we are not as safe as we think; and the sooner we decide to take preventative measures to protect ourselves and our families the better for us.

For all the young people out there who think that they will not be affected too badly by this virus because their immune systems are strong, I would like to remind you that you have family and friends who may be immuno-compromised and may not necessarily be able to fight off the virus. The answer is not in personal odeshi. We must think beyond ourselves. We must consider who else would get hurt if we get infected. The only way we can get through this is if we all do the right thing.

Stay safe everyone. Stay indoors.

Peace out.
